You Left Me Once

I saw you once

            Vibrant

                        Arresting

                                    Alive

I met you once

            Uncertain

Fearful

Shy

I touched you once

            Warm

                        Enticing

                                    Soft

I loved you once

            Learning

                        Longing

                                    Needing

You left me once

            Hopeless

Dreamless

Lifeless

Lips' Taste

Cool damp ground

Thick dry duff

Dappled shade

Bark so rough

Strong roots grip

Granite wall

Trunk leans

But doesn’t fall

Years gone by

And years ahead

Tree grows strong

Leaves create the bed

That soothes away

A day’s high stress

Shades the place

For afternoon rests

Come along

If dare you do

Lay with me

Til morning dew

If time then comes

I’m lost in haste

Our lips will feel

Each other’s taste

And leave me then

If then you must

To lay forever

Heart turned to dust

Goodbye

Goodbye.

Goodbye.

To the world I’ve known

The happiness made, the sorrow sown

Goodbye..

Goodbye..

To the sweetness of life

The pleasures, the joy, and even the strife

Goodbye…

Goodbye…

To the birds and the trees

The soft spring rains, and warm autumn breeze

Goodbye….

Goodbye….

To the lakes and the hills

All of the flowers, especially daffodils

Goodbye…..

Goodbye…..

To the plans and the joys

The dreams of girls, thoughts of boys

Goodbye……

Goodbye……

To soon it seems

For my thoughts, my hopes, my desires, my dreams

Goodbye…….

Goodbye…….

With this last retort

Life was good, but all too short

The Brook of Knowledge

The brook below me quietly speaks

Of things my soul so diligently seeks

Of answers and questions in the life of this man

And how problems and pain are part of the plan

To make me stronger, more resilient, and wise

Such that the knowledge of life I will truly prize

Above all else in this earthly plane

As the only solution to keep a man sane

And give him direction within this life

To help him survive the anger and strife.

Protecting Children

They protected the boy from all the pain and trouble

He went through his life inside of a bubble

Made from their love, their concern, their care

Threatening to smother him, to steal his air.

The other children got to run and play

To stay outside and enjoy the day

And sometimes in summer on into the night

They were allowed to run, stretch their wings in flight.

Children need to make mistakes to learn

Their boy was no different, despite their concern

And while they wanted to save the boy from strife

All they accomplished was to insulate him from life.

We Have Each Other

Lightening flashes

Streaking slivers of white

Thunder dances

On moonless night

The very ground shakes

While trees shiver

This powerful storm

Causes us both to quiver

But don’t be afraid

Little daughter of mine

We are safe with each other

Everything is just fine
