You Left Me Once

I saw you once

            Vibrant

                        Arresting

                                    Alive

 

I met you once

            Uncertain

Fearful

Shy

                                                                       

I touched you once

            Warm

                        Enticing

                                    Soft

 

I loved you once

            Learning

                        Longing

                                    Needing

 

You left me once

            Hopeless

Dreamless

Lifeless

Lips' Taste

Cool damp ground

Thick dry duff

Dappled shade

Bark so rough

 

Strong roots grip

Granite wall

Trunk leans

But doesn’t fall

 

Years gone by

And years ahead

Tree grows strong

Leaves create the bed

 

That soothes away

A day’s high stress

Shades the place

For afternoon rests

 

Come along

If dare you do

Lay with me

Til morning dew

 

If time then comes

I’m lost in haste

Our lips will feel

Each other’s taste

 

And leave me then

If then you must

To lay forever

Heart turned to dust
